JK Rowling is not only a gifted story teller, she’s gifted at creating an amazing series of books with strong female characters both supporting and forefront. Her world is both believable and enchanting. In her internationally famous Harry Potter Series, she surrounds the main person with strong women. Hermione Granger, Luna Lovegood and Professor McGonagall are wonderful examples of this.
These women do not have physical strength in any outstanding way. Their strength all comes from within. They have conviction, fierce beliefs in right and wrong, and are intelligent. They differ in personality and yet have these things in common.
Hermione Granger is one of the books most awesome women. Never short on courage, she’s also clever and skilled in all things magic. She’s caring and ready to fight for what she believes in. Her wisdom and common sense lead Harry throughout the whole series and when she has to obliterate her parents memory, she doesn’t want to, but does so because it is the only way to keep them safe.
Although a minor player who enters in book five of the series, Luna Lovegood, has a quite strength and wisdom. It is through her friendship to Harry that helps him to understand how Voldemort is thinking when he attempts to isolate him from his friends. She is often is a calm voice in chaos and does not let other’s dictate how she reacts to situations.
Professor McGonagall is beloved and respected. She supports the headmaster in all that he does. In some ways, she is a mother figure and disciplinarian. She is also wise and like a pit-bull when standing up for right. When the final battle arrives, she leads the teachers and students in what to do.
There is no question that these three know exactly who they are and what side they are on. Brilliance, wisdom and courage are what they bring to the table. If Harry did not get to be in books with strong female characters with him, he may not have been able to defeat the dark lord.
